👋 Crochet stitches and patterns on my site are written using UK terminology. I have included the US terminology as much as possible. Please see the UK/US Terminology to learn more about the differences between the two.

Written instructions

Double crochet - Insert your hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

Making a swatch

For the double crochet sample you can see in the photos, I have worked 20 stitches by 24 rows. As I wanted to have a row of 20 stitches, I started with a chain of 21 which includes the ch1 turning chain, however you can make a swatch at any size.

Foundation chain: Any number.
Row 1: dc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across to the end of the row. Ch1 and turn. [20 sts]
Row 2: dc in the first stitch and across to the end of the row. Ch1 and turn. [20 sts]
Row 3-20: Repeat row 2.

Fasten off and sew in ends.

Double crochet (dc)

The UK double crochet stitch (known as the US single crochet stitch) is one of the simplest and most important stitches in crochet. It’s a small, neat stitch that is easy to learn and very strong, making it great for projects like amigurumi, dishcloths, and bags.
